How it All Began: Gilman Background Imformation

Charlotte Gilman was born on July 3, 1860; in Hartford Connecticut. Her father was a well known man who was often busy. He left the family leaving Charlottes mother in charge of two children. They ended up moving frequently, this meant difficulty for Charlotte as a child. Charlotte could never learn to keep a friendship and often had trouble with schoolwork because each school was learn different things. She married a man named Charles Stetson in 1884 and had a child with him, named Katherine. Their marriage didn't last long until she fell for a man named John, they soon fell in love and got married but during this whole story Charlotte quotes "You see he does not believe I am sick"(1). So she feels that he loves her but thinks that "her sickness is all in [her] head"(1) That is when she wrote in her secret journal which is now know to be called The Yellow Wallpaper (1899).
